ACADEMICS

Academics: Text

As members of a global society, we want children to develop strong character and 21st century cross-disciplinary knowledge. As experts and professionals, we know the impact of an academic community where we can collaborate around best practices to support each individual learner. As parents, we understand the importance of a learning environment where children are welcomed fully.

Academics: Quote

At Rede, we build knowledge through an in-depth study of the world and how it works. Studies are integrated across core subjects, lessons are explored with ingenuity, creativity, and application to daily life, and materials build learners' conceptual understanding - utilizing ideas, transferring knowledge into new situations, applying knowledge in new contexts, and knowing more than isolated facts and methods.

Academics are only part of a rich learning experience. Innovation, inspiration, deep play and self-discovery are also required. 21st century learning addresses 21st century issues and equips children to enjoy a high quality of life, work, and relationships.

THE CURRICULUM

At Rede, we take a broader view of curriculum. Our emergent curriculum was custom developed for 21st century standards. The curriculum features Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) integrated into units as well as relevant and interesting literature, financial literacy, deep play, movement and wellness, and social and character-building experiences to create well-rounded learners. Education is personal as well as collaborative and since we all learn differently, we utilize multiple educational approaches and multiple modes of communication that allow learners to engage with coursework through multiple modalities. Our curriculum isn't driven by standardized testing but instead based on interdisciplinary opportunities to give a course relevance.

MEANINGFUL LEARNING

Inspired by the Finnish approach that's ranked best in the world, we foster holistic learning with meaningful assessments rather than the conventional ram and cram. We nurture multi-literacy and we take full advantage of outdoor spaces everyday. Technology is integrated into the classroom to communicate, connect, and hone critical thinking. Deep play is divided between periods of dedicated academic work. Opportunities for self-advocacy, negotiation skills, and self-expression are respected. And, the occasional homework is respectful of family time and blends seamlessly as opportunities to apply, enrich, and expand learning to real experiences.

AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENT

We understand that learning can be demonstrated in many ways so our assessments do not rely on any single set of measurements or standards. Our responsibility is to learn what our learners know and need and build and provide from that point. Frequent, informal assessments allow educators to document how learners are building on ideas. We key in on the soft underbelly beneath hard data. In each unit, educators engage with each learner to learn their perspective, understanding, and application of concepts and skills. Portfolios and informative narratives are provided so that the on-campus experience is transparent and visible to families.    â€‹

THE TEAMING PROCESS

We believe the optimal academic experience requires wonderful connections between the adults who share in a child's well-being. Relationships are built to get to know one another and best support learners as they explore opportunities. With an ideal class size of 12 learners per studio, we are able to provide personalized instruction for different learning styles and readiness levels. We respect each child’s individuality and family engagement is enriching for learners, for the Academy, and for parents.
